Pune, 13th June 2023: Prasar Bharati has made the decision to close the regional news section of Akashwani Pune Centre, according to a written order issued by the broadcasting corporation. Effective June 19, the regional and national Marathi news broadcasted from Pune News Division will be transferred to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) News Division.

As a consequence of this decision, the Pune regional news section, which aired on Akashwani at 7:10 am and the FM channel at 8 am, 10 am, 11:58 am, and 6 pm, will be discontinued. Additionally, the 8:30 am national news bulletin will also be terminated. These news segments will now be provided by the Aurangabad Centre.

However, the closure of the regional news unit in Pune has raised concerns about how news related to Pune will be covered and disseminated from Aurangabad.

Akashwani’s Pune centre boasts the highest number of listeners in the country, with approximately 2.4 lakh regular listeners. The centre, established in 1953, has been a prominent news broadcaster for the past four decades.

In addition to the discontinuation of the news bulletins, special news bulletins such as Pune Vrittan and news-based programs produced by the regional news division will also be halted. Prasar Bharati cited the unavailability of full-time officers from the Indian Information Service (IIS) to head the Pune News Department as the reason behind this decision.

The Pune News Division previously had two positions for Indian Information Service officers, which were subsequently transferred to other centres. Despite opposition at the time, it has now been decided to permanently close this section and shift the news responsibilities to Aurangabad.
