Provide Respite From Additional Taxation For Citizens In Pune – Demands MNS

Pune, 17th October 2022: The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has urged the state government to exempt citizens from a proposed retroactive property tax recovery (PMC).

The new tax would apply to property owners who have been receiving a tax break of 40% for self-occupied properties. “What justification is there for forcing them to pay more tax all of a sudden to recover previous taxes? Why should they endure poor administrative practices?” in a letter to chief minister Eknath Shinde, party leader Raj Thackeray stated.

In 1970, a unique programme was launched for self-occupied buildings. No state government, though, announced it as an Act. The state ended the programme in August 2019 after the state’s auditors declared the discount to be illegal on behalf of the Union government. The letter claims that the discount and the previous proposal were dropped by the state at the recommendation of local officials after no one objected to any audit report. In August, the municipal government sent letters to property owners requesting payment.

The PMC declared the texts were issued by error following many protests. A top PMC official claimed, “The PMC has not been doing any recovery of this increased tax.”
