Pune, 6th August 2021: The Forest Department has constructed check dams on Taljai Hill to check the flow of water from the slopes during monsoons. Forty such dams and ditches have been dug from the top of the hill to the base and rainwater will be diverted at different stages. This has brought relief to the residents as they have been relieved of the burden of water coming directly into the housing societies.

The settlements at the foot of Taljai Hill have grown in the last few years. During the monsoons, the water on the hill flows downhill every year. The management of this water would help the citizens living in the societies to stop the flow of water and prevent the possibility of water entering the houses, the locals had demanded to the forest department. Locals believe that the flooding of the Ambil Odha stream two years ago was also due to the flooding of water flowing down the hill. Citizens who had experienced heavy rains and floods had approached the forest department for dams.

Considering this situation, the forest department decided to plan for rainwater. Work on the hillside started in May at various places. Forty check dams/ditches have been built along the slope. From the top of the hill, ditches have been made in the first phase and dams in the second phase. All this water will be stored in the forest pond. Two ponds have been constructed on the hill and at the foot.

We have taken care that the rainwater will not bring soil and stones as it comes downhill. The forest pond at the foot of the hill will help prevent the risk of flooding. The locals are cooperating in this initiative, informed Forest Range Officer Deepak Pawar.
