Deccan, 6th April 2022: Third seed Aryan Joshi was held to a draw by experienced Marimuthu of Tamil Nadu in the third round of Sava Herbal AICFB National Chess Championships for visually challenged players at PYC Hindu Gymkhana here today.

5 players including Milind Samant of Maharashtra are leading jointly with 3 points each. Three players Marimuthu (TN), Aryan Joshi and Swapnil Shah(both MAHA) are half point behind the leaders.

On the top board, six time National Champion Kishan Gangolli continued his smooth run with his third consecutive victory. He outwitted his Karnataka team mate Sasidhar in Queen’s Gambit Opening. Sasidhar overlooked one brilliant move from Kishan and lost a pawn after which the Asian Gold Medallist easily pocketed the point.

Marimuthu squandered a golden opportunity when he let Aryan Joshi escape with a draw in Slav Defence. Taking advantage of Aryan’s oversight, Marimuthu won couple of pawns but did not continue well and Aryan came back with a strong counterplay.

Maharashtra’s Milind Samant ( 3) maintained his winning spree with a fighting win over R.Gopi of TN in Grunfeld Defence. Playing black, Milind maintained pressure on Gopi’s position and forced him to part with his Queen after which it was easy for the Maharashtra player.

The Championship is being played among 55 players from all over India to select the Indian Team for various International tournaments in China, Macedonia and France. It is fought bitterly among the top players.

Saturday will be the last day of the Championship.
