Pune: ABVP To Protest Against Arrested Medical College Dean, PMC Says It Has No Direct Role In Admission Process

Pune 10th August 2023: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has organised a protest at the Pune Municipal Corporation today to demand a strict action against the dean of PMC run Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College who was arrested by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) for demanding bribe from a student for admission. The student wing will gherao the municipal commissioner and demand assurance of strict action against the dean.

Meanwhile the PMC officials have clarified that the PMC has no role in the admission process of the college. The officials have said that a trust was formed to run this college and all the rights for the admission process were given to the college dean. The PMC was only responsible for providing basic facilities to the college. According to reports, the senior officers of the PMC have also alleged that the trust members have not shared any information with the civic body in the last two years.

The Mayor of the Municipal Corporation will be the president of the college while it will have 20 members including representatives of all the political parties and officers of the municipal corporation. However, since the municipal election is pending there was no president to the trust and the dean was taking all the decisions on his own.

It may be noted that the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College dean Ashish Banginwar was arrested by the ACB officials while accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh. He had demanded a bribe from a student who had cleared the NEET exam and he was selected for the medical college here in Pune. However, when he along with father approached the college for admission the dean demanded a bribe of Rs 16 lakh from them along with the government fees of Rs 22.5 lakh. Soon after this ACB was informed about this and the college dean was caught while accepting the bribe.
