Pune, 25th May 2023: A symbolic Helmet Day was observed in the district yesterday, conceived by District Collector Dr Rajesh Deshmukh, to promote widespread awareness of helmet use. On behalf of the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and the Pune City Traffic Police Branch, helmeted bike riders were welcomed with rose flowers at Chowks, government, and semi-government offices, while non-helmeted bike riders were alerted and faced punitive action.

Dr Deshmukh, the Collector, urged government officers and employees to celebrate the symbolic helmet day by wearing helmets to raise general awareness about helmet use, provide guidelines to the public, and ensure their own safety and that of their fellow passengers. In line with this, an awareness campaign was conducted in the city by the RTO and the traffic police.

 

Officers from the RTO were appointed at the entrances of state government, semi-government, central government, and public enterprise offices across the city. Helmet holders were greeted with rose flowers on this occasion, and attendees were educated about the importance of helmets in saving lives.

 

Individuals without helmets were encouraged to purchase helmets through awareness programs, and punitive action was taken in accordance with the rules. Regional Transport Officer Ajit Shinde stated that the RTO had taken penal action against 650 bike riders without helmets.

 

The Pune City Traffic Branch deployed additional personnel at various Chowks for this campaign. Forty-three officers and 500 police personnel participated in the symbolic Helmet Day activities at 51 Chowks and government premises.

 

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Vijay Kumar Magar, emphasized that the police are promoting the importance of helmet use through awareness campaigns. During the campaign, action was taken against 1,626 bike riders for driving without helmets, resulting in fines totaling over Rs 8.13 lakh.
