Pune, 3rd April 2026: In the wake of heavy unseasonal rainfall that caused widespread waterlogging across Pune, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced a series of measures to address flooding and improve the city’s drainage system before the monsoon.

Addressing a press conference, Mayor Manjusha Nagpure said that the civic body has identified 227 locations in the city where water tends to accumulate during heavy rainfall. These spots have been categorised into three groups based on the level of work required. Of these, necessary improvement works at 120 locations will be completed before June to reduce the risk of waterlogging during the monsoon season.

She added that the work at these locations is expected to begin from Monday.

The mayor also said that the civic administration will conduct a survey of unauthorised constructions along streams and drainage channels in the city. Action will be taken to remove encroachments that obstruct the natural flow of water.

The announcement comes after unseasonal rains lashed several parts of Pune on Thursday, leading to waterlogging in many areas. In some localities, rainwater entered residential homes, causing damage to property. A senior woman also lost her life after a tree collapsed during the storm.

Following the incident, the mayor convened an emergency meeting with senior civic officials to review the situation and discuss preventive measures. Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, Additional Commissioner Omprakash Divte, City Engineer Aniruddha Pawaskar, Project Department Head Dinkar Gojare, and Disaster Management Department Chief Madhav Jagtap were among those present at the meeting.

Officials said that Pune recorded around 104 mm of rainfall within an hour during the intense downpour, which contributed to flooding in several parts of the city.

Nagpure also addressed concerns about falling trees and branches during the rain. She said tree pruning is not limited to the pre-monsoon period and is carried out throughout the year as per regulations. Tall trees will be pruned where necessary, and dangerous trees will be removed before the monsoon to minimise risks.

Regarding the damage caused by water entering houses during the recent rains, the mayor said civic teams will conduct spot inspections and prepare assessment reports for affected households.

Meanwhile, the PMC has also decided to take action against unsafe hoardings. Nagpure said an audit of unauthorised hoardings will be conducted, and appropriate action will be taken against structures that pose a risk, especially during strong winds and heavy rain.
