Pimpri, 24th August 2022: There are clear signs that the elections will be delayed as the Supreme Court has stayed the new ward structure prepared for the upcoming municipal elections. Hence, there is great uneasiness among all party workers who are eager to become ‘corporators’. As the expenditure required to attract the voters in the ward is not enough, many candidates have given up.

The term of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) ended five months ago. The situation was created due to Corona and Other Backward Class (OBC) reservation confusion, the elections could not be held at the scheduled time i.e. in the month of February.

In the then situation, the state government appointed administrators to the municipalities. After that, there was speculation that elections would be announced before the end of an administrative rule. However, that did not happen.

On Monday (August 22), the Supreme Court ordered a five-week situation regarding changes in the ward structure of municipalities, revisions in membership and implementation of OBC reservation. As a result, as the elections will be delayed, there has been a huge crowd of interested candidates.

Candidates have been preparing to contest municipal elections for the past two years. Candidates are on a roll to implement various activities to please the voters.

However, as the dates of the elections are not announced and the daily expenses continue to rise, the aspirants are frustrated. As there is no clarity about the exact month in which the elections will be held, it is seen that the candidates are feeling uneasy.

Due to the uncertainty at the political level, party programs have also cooled down for the past few days. In preparation for the elections, political parties have planned various activities to reach the voters along with gatherings, meetings and campaigns. However, as the dates of the elections are not announced, the actual implementation has not started.

“The elections were expected to be held in February. Even at the end of August, the picture of elections is not clear. Candidates have to spend a lot to be active in the ward. It is the cost incurred so far that is the main cause of concern and the uncertainty of elections has been added to it. The result is that the usual pre-election atmosphere is not even visible,” said an interested candidate.
