Pune, 24th August 2022: Work on the planned international airport at Purandar in Pune has been stalled for the past two years. Despite Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s announcement that the airport will be built on the old site, the new government has yet to initiate any kind of activities regarding the project. Therefore, a question mark has now arisen on this project itself.

2832 hectares of land in Purandar taluka was earmarked for a separate international airport for the Pune district. Accordingly, all the processes were completed with the permission of several departments of the central government like defence, Indian Air Force, and Forest.

The process of land acquisition in seven villages affected by the airport has been completed by coordinating with the locals and rehabilitating or compensating them.

The affected will be compensated on the lines of Samruddhi Highway, Skill development training program was undertaken for the project affected to get employment. Also, the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) was appointed and funded for airport development.

However, after the change of power in the state and the formation of the Mahavikas Aghadi government, the location of the airport was changed. A meeting was held with Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh regarding the new location of the airport under the leadership of senior leader Sharad Pawar along with local people’s representatives. However, the Ministry of Defense rejected the new place.

“The ongoing works of MADC regarding Purandar Airport have been stopped behind schedule. If no instructions are received from the state government regarding the project, these works cannot be started. Further action will be taken as per the orders of the state government,” said Deepak Nalavde, Divisional Officer of MADC.

Meanwhile, after the collapse of the Mahavikas Aghadi government, former Purandar taluka MLA Vijay Shivtare has started efforts to restore the airport project to its old place. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also spoke about this in a public meeting at Saswad.

However, in reality, no progress has been made regarding the project. At the local administrative level, land surveying, an inspection of documents or related works have been stopped. Also, the work of paperwork related to land acquisition from MADC has been completely stopped. As no initiative is being taken even at the state government level, the issue of the airport has again stalled.
