Pune-Bangalore Highway: Steep Slopes and Lack of Service Roads Cause 215 Accidents in 9 Years, Claims 84 Lives

Narhe, 23rd April 2023: Pune-Bangalore highway, one of the busiest national highways in India, has been a cause for concern when it comes to accidents.

According to recent reports, major causes of accidents on this highway include sudden braking difficulties for heavy vehicles due to steep slopes, the lack of service roads forcing local motorists to travel on national highways, and drivers ‘neutralizing’ vehicles on slopes to save fuel, causing a loss of control over their vehicles.

In order to avoid these accidents, necessary measures have been suggested, including minimizing gradients on national highways, completing service roads between Navale Bridge to Vadgaon Bridge which is in partial condition, constructing a service road between Warje Bridge and Vadgaon Bridge, and ensuring that all local transport services are by road, making appropriate arrangements.

However, two-way encroachment on service roads and unruly drivers are mainly responsible for accidents. Sidewalks, shops, parking and a large number of hoardings have also been erected on both sides of the service road, and many puncture shops on the highway have led to many motorists coming and going in the opposite direction, leading to an increase in accidents.

The Katraj New Tunnel to Vadgaon Bridge stretch of the highway, a distance of 4 km, has been marked as an accident-prone area. In the past nine years from 2014 to April 2023, a total of 84 deaths, 235 injuries, 215 accidents, and 165 cases of damage to vehicles have been reported in this area.

In light of these statistics, it is essential that the authorities take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians on this busy highway. The completion of service roads and the removal of encroachments and obstructions could go a long way in preventing accidents and saving lives.
