Pune: Bhugaon to Get Sewage Treatment Plant to Tackle Ram River Pollution
Bavdhan, 15th February 2025: The pollution levels in the Ram River have worsened due to the unchecked discharge of sewage and various waste materials. In Bhugaon, untreated wastewater is flowing directly into the river, aggravating the issue.

Origin: Khatpewadi
Total Length: 19 km
Estimated Cost of STP: ₹45 lakh
Local activist Krunal Ghare, who has been actively advocating for the river’s restoration, has taken legal action to push for corrective measures. After persistent efforts, the Bhugaon Gram Panchayat has now decided to establish a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) along the river to mitigate pollution.
Concerned citizens have also stepped up to support the initiative, aiming to curb sewage discharge and restore the river’s ecological balance.
Speaking about the development, Ghare stated, “For years, I have been working to bring attention to the deteriorating condition of the Ram River. It is encouraging to see the Bhugaon Gram Panchayat finally take a stand by planning an STP. This will play a crucial role in keeping the 19-kilometer river clean. It’s also a positive step that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is now working with the Gram Panchayat on this issue.”
The PMC has agreed to connect Bhugaon’s sewage system to the Bavdhan STP. However, due to financial limitations, the Bhugaon Gram Panchayat is struggling to fund the necessary infrastructure. To bridge the gap, officials are exploring Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding to finance the project.
