Pune, 16th January 2025: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya defended the Maharashtra Government’s handling of law and order in Maharashtra, following criticism from opposition parties in the wake of the knife attack on actor Saif Ali Khan in Mumbai.

Somaiya asserted that the Maharashtra Government, led by Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has maintained a strong grip on law and order. He contrasted this with the previous Uddhav Thackeray-led government, claiming that political opponents were jailed during that time.

“The law and order situation in Maharashtra is extremely robust. Even minor incidents are promptly addressed and followed up on,” Somaiya stated, dismissing concerns raised by opposition leaders about the safety of common citizens and celebrities in Mumbai.

Addressing the ongoing investigation into the issuance of birth certificates to alleged Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants, Somaiya revealed that he had met with the district collector to discuss the matter. He provided statistics on birth certificates issued in various cities, including 4,318 in Malegaon and 4,537 in Amravati, expressing concern over the high numbers.

When questioned about the lack of Enforcement Directorate (ED) action against Walmik Karad, Somaiya explained that the ED acts independently based on the evidence it receives. He noted that Karad had received an ED notice before the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) split.

Regarding calls for Minister Dhananjay Munde’s resignation, Somaiya stated that the common people desire action against those involved in thuggery, murder, and extortion, assuring that such action would indeed be taken.
