Pune: Bribery Cases Continue To Increase In PCMC
Pimpri, 23rd March 2023: Bribery cases at the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) have seen a rapid increase and continue on an upward trajectory. The bribery case that started in 1997 with a bribe of Rs 300 to register a flat in Chinchwad’s Premlok Park is still going on. From the personal assistant of the then commissioner to the chairman of the standing committee have been arrested for bribery. The image of the municipal corporation is tarnished due to bribery cases.
PCMC is known as a rich municipality. So far, 33 officials and employees of this municipal corporation have been caught in the net of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). Officers and employees were arrested for demanding bribes ranging from Rs 100 to 12 lakh. Some of them were dismissed from service. Some, however, were acquitted by the court and reinstated in service. It also includes the Personal Assistant of the then Commissioner. Therefore, the incompetence of the administration in the municipal corporation is increasing. The surprising thing is that officials and employees are being caught red-handed while accepting bribes in the municipal headquarters itself.
Several efforts are being made to eliminate corruption in the government system. Its importance is being conveyed through public awareness gatherings and camps. Even after that, corruption in the system is still coming to the fore. As many as 33 officers and employees of PCMC have been caught red-handed from 17th February 1997 to 21st March 2023. Some of these officers and employees have been acquitted and joined the service. So, one officer has been relieved from service.
In the history of the Municipal Corporation, Deputy Accountant Anil Bothra took a bribe of Rs 300 to register a flat at Premlok Park, Chinchwad. In this case, the Municipal Corporation was accused of bribery. Bothra was suspended on 17th February 1997. After a few years, he was taken back into the municipal service. So far, 32 incidents of bribery have taken place, and the 33rd action has been taken on Tuesday, 21st March. However, due to these incidents, the image of the municipal corporation is tarnished.
The tenure of the corporators in the municipal corporation ended on 13th March 2022. After that, the administrative regime has been going on in the municipal corporation since last year. Under the administrative regime, chaos is going on in the Municipal Corporation and it is seen that Commissioner and Administrator Shekhar Singh has no control over the administration. The residents of the city expected that there would be transparent governance in the administrative regime. However, this expectation has failed. So far, two cases of bribery have come to light during the administrative regime. On 3rd August 2022, a surveyor in the town planning department was arrested for demanding a bribe of Rs two lakhs. Then, on Tuesday, ACB caught a water supply department tracer red-handed for taking a bribe. Due to this, it can be seen that corruption is going on even in the administrative regime.
