Wanowrie, 11th July 2025: A shocking case of food contamination has emerged from Pune’s Wanowrie area, where a woman discovered a cockroach in the soup served to her at a local hotel. Following the incident, Wanowrie Police have registered a case against the hotel owner and manager for endangering public health.

According to police, the incident occurred on June 16 at Bhiwandi Darbar Hotel, where the complainant, Ashwini Ravi Shissat (31), a resident of Dapodi, had gone for dinner with her family. Before the main course was served, the family was offered soup — and to their horror, a cockroach was found floating in it.

Shissat immediately confronted the hotel staff and questioned the manager and workers about hygiene practices. The situation escalated as the staff allegedly failed to respond seriously, prompting Shissat to approach the police.

Based on her complaint, police have registered a case against the hotel’s manager, Aman Hussain Sheikh (24), a resident of Azadnagar in Bhiwandi, along with the unidentified owner of the establishment. They have been booked under Section 275 of the BNS for selling adulterated food that could be harmful to health.

In her complaint, Shissat alleged gross negligence in the maintenance of kitchen hygiene and claimed that food unfit for consumption was being served to customers.

This incident is not isolated. Earlier, a similar case was reported from the Vishrantwadi area, where a dead rat was found in a chocolate shake ordered from a café. That case is also under investigation by local police.

Following these incidents, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued strict guidelines to hotel and restaurant operators in Pune. The agency has directed that kitchen cleanliness must be maintained at all times and that adulteration or contamination of food will not be tolerated.

Officials also expressed concern over unhygienic food carts operating in the city and the use of contaminated water by vendors.

The FDA has warned of stringent action against establishments found violating food safety standards.
