Pune Collector’s Ultimatum : Make Chakan Roads Pothole-Free by Aug 25 or Face Action
Pune, 6th August 2026: District collector Jitendra Dudi on Thursday directed all agencies, including the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Public Works Department (PWD), Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), to make all roads in and around the Chakan industrial belt pothole-free by August 25, warning that departments would be held accountable if accidents occur due to poor road conditions after the deadline.
Chairing a review meeting at the collectorate on road conditions, traffic management, monsoon preparedness and encroachments on rivers, streams and public roads in the Chakan area, Dudi said he would personally inspect the roads after August 25. He warned that if potholes continue to cause accidents beyond the deadline, responsibility would be fixed on the concerned department and legal action would be initiated as per rules.
The meeting was attended by officials from MIDC, PMRDA, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), NHAI, the Public Works Department and the traffic police.
Dudi also directed encroachers to voluntarily remove encroachments on rivers, streams and public roads within one month at their own cost. He warned that if the encroachments remain after the deadline, the administration would carry out demolition drives, recover the removal cost from the encroachers and initiate action under the relevant laws.
The district collector instructed all departments to undertake road repairs on a war footing and complete the work within the stipulated timeframe through coordinated efforts. Stressing that public safety was the top priority, he said no delay in repairing potholes or removing encroachments would be tolerated.
The meeting also reviewed several accident-prone stretches in the Chakan region. Officials were directed to remove unsafe speed breakers and construct new ones as per Indian Roads Congress (IRC) standards. They were also asked to install directional signboards, road markings, reflective strips and other safety measures at vulnerable locations. The traffic police were instructed to take strict action against illegal roadside parking to ensure smooth vehicular movement.
The review covered several key stretches, including Talegaon Chowk, Ranubai Mala, Kharabwadi, Waghjai Nagar-Kharabwadi Road, all junctions at Mhalunge Ingale, Khalumbre and Shinde Vasuli, Ambethan Y-Corner, Koregaon Phata, Birdawadi Phata, the Dawane Mala-Dwarka City Road, and the stretch from Corning Company to the Pune-Nashik National Highway. Officials noted that the poor condition of these roads has been disrupting traffic and increasing the risk of accidents. The concerned agencies were directed to immediately fill potholes, repair damaged stretches, strengthen road shoulders and implement necessary safety measures at all identified locations.
