Pune: PMC Says No potholes on Cycling Race Roads, Except Utility-Dug Stretches

Pune, 6th August 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Thursday clarified that the roads developed for the Pune Grand Tour 2026 International Cycling Race remain in good condition, and that only those stretches where utility agencies have subsequently carried out excavation works for water supply, Maharashtra Natural Gas Ltd (MNGL), drainage and power infrastructure now appear damaged.

In a press statement, the civic body said the project, executed between October 2025 and January 2026, involved resurfacing only damaged portions of roads along the 75-km race route, levelling chamber covers, repairing footpaths and road dividers, removing speed breakers and undertaking other road safety measures. It clarified that the project did not involve resurfacing the entire length of the roads.

PMC further said that on divided roads forming part of the race route, only the carriageway designated for the cycling event was repaired under the project, while the opposite carriageway was outside its scope. It cited Nehru Road and Kondhwa Road as examples.

The civic body maintained that all works executed by the contractor, including resurfacing and levelling of chamber covers, were completed satisfactorily and that, except for stretches excavated later by utility agencies, there are no potholes on roads repaired under the project. It added that the contractor remains responsible for maintaining these roads during the defect liability period.

According to the PMC, after the cycling event concluded in January 2026, several agencies, including the water supply department, Maharashtra Natural Gas Ltd (MNGL), the drainage department and the electricity department, carried out excavation and utility works at various locations along the route. These works damaged certain stretches of roads and footpaths, and the respective departments have been directed to restore them after completing their projects.

The clarification came after reports in sections of the media claimed that road works under the cycling race project had not been carried out at several locations. PMC said the statement was issued to clear the confusion and reiterated that the roads developed under the project remain in good condition.
