Dhayari, 7th July 2026: Concerns were raised on Tuesday after cracks were noticed on the MLA Ramesh Wanjale Flyover at Dhayari Phata, prompting speculation about the structural safety of the bridge. However, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has clarified that the flyover is safe and that the visible cracks are part of the bridge’s expansion joints, not signs of structural damage.

The flyover, constructed by the PMC in 2011 to ease traffic congestion on the Dhayari, Nanded, and Khadakwasla route, is a vital arterial link that carries thousands of vehicles every day, including heavy vehicles such as dumpers, concrete mixers, trucks, and water tankers.

Following continuous heavy rainfall over the past four days, cracks became visible on the road surface of the flyover. The issue was brought to the civic body’s notice by Shiv Sena divisional chief Mahesh Pokale, following which PMC officials, the project contractor, and technical consultants jointly inspected the structure on Tuesday morning.

Explaining the situation, PMC Project Department Head Dinkar Gojare said the cracks are located at the bridge’s expansion joints, which are intentionally provided between two girders to accommodate movement caused by structural stress, temperature changes, and traffic loads.

He said the flyover spans two canals of different levels, requiring the installation of inclined girders during construction. The bridge deck consists of steel plates, reinforced cement concrete, and an asphalt wearing course. Since the flyover is around 15 years old, the asphalt layer has now developed cracks, making the expansion joints visible.

“The cracks seen on the road surface and parapet are expansion joints that are intentionally provided. They do not indicate any structural damage to the flyover. Repair work on the asphalt layer will be undertaken immediately, but there is no threat to the safety of the bridge,” Gojare clarified.

The PMC has assured commuters that the flyover remains structurally sound and safe for traffic, while repair work on the surface layer will be carried out at the earliest.
