Pimpri-Chinchwad, 17th May 2025: A woman in Pune’s Bavdhan has died by suicide in a shocking case. She was the daughter-in-law of Rajendra Hagawane, a leader in the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The deceased woman’s husband was reportedly suspicious of her character, which, combined with alleged dowry-related harassment from him and his family, drove her to suicide, according to her father, who has filed an official complaint with the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police.

Reports claim that injury marks were found all over her body after death, and she had previously attempted suicide for the same reasons. Anand Kaspate (age 51), a resident of Wakad, has lodged the complaint at the Bavdhan Police Station. His daughter, Vaishnavi, died by suicide by hanging herself.

The Bavdhan Police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against her husband, Shashank Hagawane; father-in-law, Rajendra Hagawane; brother-in-law, Sushil Hagawane; mother-in-law; and sister-in-law, all residents of Bhukum. According to police reports, Shashank and Vaishnavi had a love marriage in April 2023. However, the Hagawane family allegedly demanded dowry and continued to do so even after the marriage.

In August 2023, Vaishnavi was pregnant, but her husband reportedly denied paternity, claiming the baby was not his. She was also allegedly physically assaulted. Due to continued harassment over dowry and character accusations, she returned to her parents’ house. Exhausted and distressed, she attempted suicide by consuming poison in November 2023. After recovering, she was taken back by the Hagwane family.

However, the harassment allegedly continued, with more demands for money in the name of dowry and family reputation. The cycle of torture, taunts, and disrespect persisted. On 16th May, after a reported fight between Vaishnavi and her husband, her family repeatedly tried to contact her, but she did not respond. Eventually, the Kaspate family was informed that their daughter had died by suicide by hanging. Injury marks were found on her body.

The Bavdhan Police are continuing their investigation into the matter.
