Pune: Distinguished Military Veteran and Civic Activist, Major General Jathar, Passes Away

Pune, 24th October 2023: Major General SCN Jathar (retd), an officer who dedicated his life to service, passed away at the age of 91 on Monday night after a prolonged illness. Major General Jathar’s contributions extend far beyond the military, as he actively participated in the development of Pune by raising civic issues.
His military career was marked by distinction and unwavering commitment to his duties. He was commissioned in the Bombay Sappers (Corps of Engineers) and played a vital role in the Indian Army.
His notable achievements include commanding an infantry brigade in challenging regions like Kashmir and Rajasthan. He also served as the Staff Officer to Gen. K. V. Krishna Rao’s Expert Committee for the reorganization of the Indian Army, where his insights and expertise significantly contributed to the military’s structural development during a critical phase.
During the 1971 War, Major General Jathar’s leadership shone through as he commanded the 105 Engineer Regiment. His regiment undertook vital tasks, including clearing minefields, and constructing underground bunkers, and helipads. These efforts played a crucial role in the capture of Nangi Tekri during the intense battle of Poonch, highlighting Major General Jathar’s tactical brilliance.
After retiring from the Indian Army, Major General Jathar continued his journey of service, this time in the corporate world. He held esteemed positions, serving as the Chairman and Managing Director of Oil India, Chairman and Managing Director of ONGC Videsh Limited, and Chairman of SCOPE, the apex body of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).
Major General Jathar’s expertise extended to corporate consultancy, where he provided valuable insights to organizations such as Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. He also held key positions, including President of RPG Petrochem Ltd and Managing Director of Garware Shipping Limited, leaving an indelible mark in the business world.
Major General Jathar’s passing represents the loss of a multifaceted individual whose contributions have left an enduring legacy in the military and corporate sectors. His dedication to the nation and leadership acumen will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come.
