Pune, 8th November 2023: Prison inmates in the Maharashtra State have reason to celebrate this Diwali, as the prison administration has decided to increase their wages. In light of the challenges and difficulties faced by prisoners, it has been decided to raise their salaries by two thousand rupees.

Starting from November 1, prison inmates will receive a monthly salary of Rs 8,000, which is an increase from the previous monthly wage of Rs 6,000. This salary increase is intended to provide inmates with the means to purchase items from the prison canteen. The decision was made during a meeting chaired by ADG Amitabh Gupta.

In the state’s correctional facilities, certain inmates who are serving sentences for various offences are given work opportunities in various industries and agriculture as part of reformation and rehabilitation programs. Inmates are classified as unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled, based on their level of expertise and the type of work they perform. As per government regulations, there is a provision to increase the compensation (salary) of inmates by ten per cent every three years.
