Pune: Bombay High Court Directs Government To Prevent Air Pollution, PCMC Takes Immediate Measures

Pimpri, 8th November 2023: Expressing grave concern over the deteriorating air quality, the High Court of Bombay has issued directives to the government to urgently take measures to prevent pollution. In response to this, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s Commissioner and Administrator Shekhar Singh has instructed the concerned officials to implement necessary actions to combat air pollution.

A crucial meeting was held under the leadership of Commissioner Shekhar Singh at the primary administrative building of the Pimpri Municipal Corporation. The meeting was attended by Additional Commissioner Pradeep Jambhale Patil, Vijaykumar Khorate, City Engineer Makarand Nikam, and other officials of various departments.

The Bombay High Court recently took up a public interest petition on its own regarding the escalating air pollution issue. In response, the court directed the government and the PCMC to acknowledge the gravity of the issue and take immediate measures to combat air pollution, along with submitting a report on the actions taken. The government has taken this matter seriously and has issued pollution control guidelines and directives. The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board has also issued various guidelines and suggestions to prevent air pollution, taking into account pollution levels in different cities.

To implement the government’s guidelines to combat air pollution statewide, a meeting was held under the chairmanship of the state’s Chief Secretary Manoj Saunik via video conference. The meeting included the participation of Commissioners from various Municipal Corporations and discussed the Bombay High Court’s recommendations. The Chief Secretary has issued instructions for necessary measures to prevent pollution.

The PCMC has been directed to take various measures to prevent air pollution. Strict actions will be taken against individuals or establishments responsible for actions such as littering in public places and burning garbage.

Commissioner Shekhar Singh has instructed the zonal officers and department officials to form special teams and strictly enforce the rules. Specific guidelines will be issued by the Municipal Corporation, and punitive actions will be taken against violators. Singh emphasized the importance of conducting meetings to disseminate information about the guidelines and orders to the relevant parties, warning that officials will be held accountable and face strict action if they fail to take action or show negligence in their duties.
