Pune, 15th April 2026 : Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) corporator Vishal Dhanawade on Wednesday met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, urging him to intervene and prevent the proposed shifting of the traditional palkhi halt from Bhavani Peth.

The demand comes amid growing concerns among local residents over reports of relocating the centuries-old halt of the Sant tradition’s revered palkhi procession from the Vitthal temple in Bhavani Peth. The halt, which has been observed for nearly 350 years, is considered an integral part of the religious procession.

During the meeting, Dhanawade held detailed discussions with the chief minister, requesting that the traditional halt be retained and that necessary arrangements be made to ensure the smooth conduct of the palkhi procession without any inconvenience to devotees.

He claimed that the chief minister has assured that the administration would be instructed to take appropriate steps and extend necessary support while respecting the sentiments of devotees.

Vishal Dhanawade, who is also a trustee of the Nivdunga Vitthal Devasthan Trust, outlined a series of measures being planned to improve facilities at the existing site. These include efforts to acquire an adjacent property to expand the temple premises and create more space for the palkhi halt.

He also said that the PMC has initiated action to remove unauthorised structures along the palkhi route near the temple, with the work expected to be completed within eight days. Plans are also underway to widen the main entrance of the temple to facilitate smoother entry of the palkhi, with the work likely to be completed within 45 days.

To manage the large crowds that gather during the halt, authorities are working on improved crowd control measures, including the creation of separate queues to streamline darshan and reduce congestion, particularly during rituals such as paduka abhishek.

Arrangements are also being planned for accommodation of trustees, volunteers and dindi groups accompanying the palkhi, including covered mandaps, electricity supply, round-the-clock water and sanitation facilities through the civic body, he said.

Appealing to the chief minister, he stressed that the 350-year-old tradition should not be disrupted and the historic halt at Bhavani Peth must be preserved, respecting the faith and sentiments of devotees.
