Pune: Drunk Driver Hits Multiple Vehicles on NDA Road, Attempts Escape with Policeman Inside Car
Pune, 8th April 2026: A dramatic chase unfolded on NDA Road in Warje on Tuesday afternoon when a traffic constable climbed into a moving car to stop an allegedly drunk driver who had rammed multiple vehicles. The driver instead of stopping the vehicles allegedly tried to abduct the policeman and escape from the spot.
Police said the 25-year-old Kothrud resident had hit at least four vehicles while driving from Shivane towards Warje, leading to heavy congestion on the busy stretch. The situation came to light when Uttamnagar police station’s senior inspector Raghvendra Kshirsagar, who was heading to the Shivajinagar court, noticed the chaos.
“Our vehicle was stuck in traffic, and while clearing the jam using the hooter and public address system, we saw a man abusing and threatening other motorists. As traffic eased, we realised he had already hit several vehicles,” Kshirsagar said.
Acting on his alert, traffic constables stationed at Warje chowk attempted to stop the car. When asked to pull over, the driver instead accelerated, forcing one of the constables to grab the passenger-side handle and jump into the moving vehicle. Despite being ordered to stop, the driver continued speeding towards Ambedkar chowk.
Fearing further accidents, police teams gave chase and intercepted the vehicle after a brief pursuit. The driver was pulled out of the car and the constable was rescued safely.
The accused was taken to Warje police station, where a medical examination confirmed he was under the influence of alcohol. An FIR has been registered, and further investigation is underway, police said.
