Pimpri, 1st March 2023: An industrial city, Pimpri-Chinchwad is also known as a major commercial hub. Several citizens come here from the surrounding rural areas for shopping. These areas are always crowded for wholesale and retail shopping as the goods are available cheaper in certain areas. But there are growing complaints that many traders here are selling fake goods. Cases have also been registered in this regard in the last few months.

A national report on counterfeit goods was recently published. According to this report, 25 to 30 per cent of the total items sold online or offline in the country are fake. The level of counterfeiting is higher in the apparel and Fast Moving Consumer Goods sectors (FMCG). According to this report, 31 per cent of the clothes are sold with a sticker of some brand.

Last year, cases were also registered against seven businessmen in Pimpri for selling fake goods. These cases were filed in connection with the sale of clothes using logos of big brands. The threads of this case had reached Punjab.

It includes many items like big-brand clothes, watches, shoes, pens, and goggles. A brand has now become a status symbol. But not everyone can afford branded items. Many shops in the city are known for First Copies. Youngsters urge the shopkeeper to ask for the first copy by telling the shopkeeper about the clothes, shoes, watch brand, and model number they want.

Sometimes knowingly and sometimes unknowingly, fake spare parts of vehicles are sold in huge quantities. Real and fake are identified as company products and local products. Often businessmen ask the customer whether to offer company or local. Since there is a big gap between the two, naturally, customers prefer fake items.

Some items are so blatantly imitated that it becomes difficult to distinguish between genuine and fake. Such goods are sold claiming to contain counterfeit goods. According to the report, about 27 per cent of people do not know that they are buying counterfeit goods. But the consumer knows the actual price of some branded items, especially clothes, shoes, perfumes, watches, and fashion accessories. So even though citizens are being sold fakes at very low prices, they eventually buy them.
