Pune: FDA Shuts Down Mathura Pure Veg Temporarily Over Food Safety Violations
Pune, 6th July 2026: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified its enforcement against food safety violations in Pune, temporarily closing the well-known Mathura Pure Veg restaurant on Jangli Maharaj Road and suspending the licences of seven other restaurants for alleged breaches of food safety norms.
The temporary closure of Mathura Pure Veg will remain in effect until the laboratory analysis of food samples collected from the restaurant is completed and the results are received.
The action forms part of the state’s ‘Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra’ initiative, a special campaign aimed at improving food hygiene standards and protecting consumers by ensuring that food establishments comply with the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act.
The enforcement drive was carried out under the supervision of FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe. As part of the campaign, inspection teams conducted surprise visits to nearly 70 hotels and restaurants across Maharashtra between July 1 and July 3.
During inspections in Pune, officials reportedly detected several shortcomings, including unhygienic kitchen environments, the use and storage of expired food items, improper storage methods, poor food handling practices, and violations of mandatory food safety and hygiene requirements. In several establishments, inspectors also noted inadequate cleanliness and failure to maintain prescribed sanitation standards.
According to the FDA, the statewide inspection campaign is intended to strengthen compliance with food safety regulations and encourage restaurants and food businesses to maintain high standards of hygiene, quality, and consumer safety. The department said similar inspections and enforcement measures will continue across Maharashtra as part of its ongoing monitoring efforts.
