Pune: For Chatting On WhatsApp With Boy, Man Kills Two Daughters And Commits Suicide

Pune, 18 April 2021: A 40-year-old man allegedly killed his two daughters by running a truck over them and also committed suicide under the same truck. A police investigation has revealed that he was angry as he suspected that his daughter used to chat with a boy on WhatsApp.
The deceased persons have been identified as Bharat Dnyandev Bharate, his daughters Nandini (18), and Vaishnavi (14). They hailed from Sawdi in Karmala taluka of Solapur district and resided in Alfanagari locality of Induri in Maval taluka of Pune district for the last few years.
Based on a complaint from his wife Sapna (36), Talegaon Dabhade police station, under Pimpri Chinchwad police commissionerate, has registered an FIR against Bharat for offences under sections 302 (murder) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
According to police, the family lived in a tin shed for the last few years. Their other relatives also stayed nearby. Bharat worked as a truck driver, while his wife Sapna worked at a factory in Induri. He had written the name of his daughter ‘Nandini’ on his truck. For the last few days, there was a dispute in the family over suspecting Nandini, who studied in class 12th, of having a relationship with a boy.
On Saturday around 4 pm, Bharat had thrashed Nandini and Vaishnavi suspecting that Nandini was chatting on WhatsApp with a boy. He suspected that Vaishnavi knew about the relationship and did not inform the family.
When his wife Sapna returned from work around 7 pm, he told her about beating the daughters and held her responsible for the ‘behaviour’ of the girls. After dinner, he wrote something on a paper and forced Sapna to sign it without allowing her to read it, Sapna told the police.
As per the FIR, around 1 am Bharat took the girls out of the tin shed. Sapna did not object thinking he has taken them as it was hot inside. He had taken them for a stroll earlier also. However, she came out when she heard the sound of the truck engine.
“Bharat had threatened the girls and forced them to lie down in front of the truck. He was telling me also to come and lie down. I got frightened and fled to a relative’s house with our 4-year-old daughter. When I returned with the relatives, all three were lying in a pool of blood. Vaishnavi was still alive and we rushed her to Talegaon General Hospital in an autorickshaw. However, she was declared dead on arrival at the hospital”, Sapna told police.
The body of Bharat was found about 50 meters away from the girls. The truck had hit a wall and came to a halt.
Police have recovered the suicide note which states, “Appa, we apologise. We are committing suicide as my daughter is on the wrong path. Cremate us together. Nobody should be held responsible…..”
However, cops are still puzzled about why the girls didn’t escape when Bharat went to start the truck and before he jumped out and lied down near them.
Police sub-inspector Rahul Koli is further investigating the case.
