Pune: Fraudster Arrested By Pimpri Chinchwad Police For Duping Shopkeepers With Online Payment Screenshots

Pimpri Chinchwad, September 8, 2023: In a significant breakthrough, Pimpri Chinchwad police arrested a cunning and tech-savvy fraudster, Ganesh Borse, aged 34, hailing from Lohegaon.
Borse’s arrest came after diligent investigations led by Police Inspector Shankar Avtade and his team at the Crime Branch Unit 4 of the Pimpri Chinchwad Police.
The case traces back to a complaint filed on September 8th by Dilipkumar Mali of Rahatani, who reported falling victim to a scam by a couple visiting his shop. The duo had duped Mali by presenting counterfeit screenshots, falsely indicating successful online payments. An FIR was registered for offences under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including section 420 (cheating), section 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), section 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record), and section 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) and relevant section of the Information Technology Act.
Police said that Borse is the mastermind behind this scam. Following the commission of a crime, he would promptly turn off his phone and employ multiple phone numbers to elude capture. However, the Pimpri Chinchwad police’s effective utilization of technology led to his arrest.
Upon thorough examination, it was revealed that Borse, along with his wife and children, had been orchestrating this scam for the past 2-3 years. Their modus operandi involved purchasing goods from shops and vendors and subsequently presenting fabricated payment successful screenshots as proof of transaction. In some cases, they would claim to have initiated NEFT transactions, deceiving victims into waiting for 24 hours before realizing they had been scammed.
What further complicated their activities was the use of various SIM cards, with Borse providing shopkeepers with numbers registered under the names of innocent individuals. This elaborate scheme had ensnared over 400 shopkeepers, who fell prey to Borse’s fraudulent tactics.
