Pune, 26th March 2026: Amid growing concern over dog bite incidents, the Pune Municipal Corporation has ensured the free availability of anti-rabies vaccines across its hospitals and maternity centres, with health experts underscoring the importance of immediate treatment.

Civic officials said facilities such as Kamla Nehru Hospital and other municipal healthcare centres are providing anti-rabies vaccination (ARV) at no cost. On average, between 1,600 and 2,000 doses are administered each month, with the annual requirement estimated at around 60,000 doses.

Rabies, a highly fatal viral infection transmitted through animal bites, continues to pose a serious public health risk. Medical experts warn that once symptoms develop, rabies is almost always fatal. However, timely administration of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) can completely prevent the disease. Officials explained that the vaccine works by helping the body produce antibodies that neutralise the virus before it reaches the brain.

The civic body procures vaccines through a tender process, with each dose costing approximately ₹125–₹150. In comparison, private hospitals typically charge ₹300–₹400 per injection, while immunoglobulin—required in severe cases—can cost over ₹4,000.

Assistant Health Officer Dr Sanjeev Wavare said treatment depends on the severity of the wound. Minor scratches or superficial bites generally require a course of 3 to 5 vaccine doses administered over a scheduled timeline (Day 0, 7, 14, and 28). In cases involving deep wounds or bites near sensitive areas, immunoglobulin is administered to provide immediate protection.

Officials also noted that rabies spreads through the saliva of infected animals such as dogs, cats, and bats, entering the body through bites or open wounds and progressively affecting the nervous system.

For advanced care, patients are referred to Naidu Infectious Diseases Hospital, the district’s primary facility for infectious diseases. Authorities added that no rabies-related deaths have been reported within Pune city limits in the referenced data.

Civic health authorities have urged residents to seek immediate medical attention following any animal bite, emphasising that prompt vaccination remains the most effective defence against the disease.
