Pune, 8th July 2022: If you’re someone who cannot resist the traditional, dhaba-style “gavran chicken/mutton,” and yearns for piping hot, freshly made bajra/jowar bhakris, then Aundh’s Hotel Gayatri is sure to have your palate pleased. Enter the modest eatery, almost unmissable, standing right opposite Aundh’s Medipoint hospital, and you’re assured it’s a no-frills, yet seemingly promising food destination.

Your faith in Gayatri’s merit is only reassured, if you walk into their desi “chulha” station, where you can witness fresh, hot bhakris puffing up the iron pans, adroitly prepared by the most seasoned hands. “Want to give it a shot?” lovingly asks the maushi (cook), as she effortlessly pats the next bhakri, and tosses the other on the flame.

The “special chicken thali” was a complete winner for us. The ritual is, to begin with, the “chicken Alani” or broth, which is bland by character but cleanses the palate, prepping it to embark on a journey of meaty indulgence. The thali is an ensemble of chicken varieties, with chicken sukka, gavran chicken curry, and the signature ‘kharda,’ blending tambda (spiced red curry)-and-pandhra rassa (prepared using coconut milk) with Indrayani rice, and Chicken Biryani: all of this in copious amounts, in one hearty thali, and with unlimited helpings, not to forget, the intermittent cooling doses of the soul-nourishing “solkadhi.”

All in all, Hotel Gayatri won our hearts, and we cannot wait to discover the range of vegetarian varieties that the place offers, with an earnest promise of flavours and perfection.
