Pune: Green Light for Proposed 28 km Tunnel Between Khadakwasla Dam and Fursungi
Pune, 20th April 2023: The State Level Technical Advisory Committee has approved the proposal for a 28 km long tunnel between Khadakwasla Dam and Fursungi, marking an important milestone in the project’s progress. The proposed tunnel is expected to save about 2.8 billion cubic feet (TMC) of water, enough to sustain the city for two months, and reduce water leakage for agricultural use.
The project report was prepared after tenders were issued, and a report was sent to the Technical Advisory Committee by the Technical Water Resources Department. The committee found minor errors in the report, which were corrected before giving the green light to the project. The report will now be sent to the state government for final approval.
According to H.V. Gunale, the Chief Engineer of Water Resources Pune Division, the tunnel will be 7.80 meters wide, 3.90 meters high, and 1.950 meters circular in height, and will take water from Khadakwasla to Fursungi by gravity, increasing the canal’s capacity to 1510 cusecs. This will help prevent water pollution, leakage, and evaporation, saving about 2.5 TMC of water.
The project has been welcomed by local residents and water resource experts, who see it as a significant step in addressing the city’s water scarcity. The tunnel is expected to have a significant impact on the water supply to the city, ensuring a regular supply of water throughout the year.
The project’s final approval from the state government is expected soon, and work on the tunnel is set to commence shortly thereafter.
