Pune, 30th December 2021: With a reputation of ‘Vidyeche Maherghar’ (hometown of education) and a network of 54 laboratories, 120 engineering colleges, 139 small and large research institutes, Pune has the potential to become known as ‘Silicon Valley’. This requires goal setting, constructive work, willpower, interaction and cooperation and implementation of ambitious programs, discussed in a meeting of experts in the field of research and development.

The Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Park (STEP) and the Technology Transfer Association (TTA) had organized a brainstorming session to make Pune a ‘Silicon Valley’ in India, similar to the Silicon Valley in the US. During the brainstorming session, Dr Rajendra Jagdale, Director General of STEP, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Yashwant Gharpure, TTA President along with scientists from Pune, experts from various research institutes and entrepreneurs were present.
The senior scientist at Vasantdada Sugar Institute, Dr. Deepali Nimbalkar, Prof. Dr. Sukratu Barve, University’s Center for Modeling and Simulation, The director of Abgenesis Life Sciences, Dr. Sanjiban Banerjee, STP officer Hardik Joshi, Vigyan Arya, Prof. Dhawale discussed in the meeting.

Dr. Rajendra Jagdale said, “Pune is the cradle of national movements. It is home to various laboratories, research institutes, IT hubs, engineering colleges, innovations and startups. There are more than 12,000 manufacturing factories here. Pune is becoming the hub of e-vehicles. The technology sector is making a significant contribution to the development of Pune and the country. Pune city has a very conducive environment to emerge as India’s Silicon Valley.”

Yashwant Gharpure said, “India is a beacon of intelligence in the world today. The contribution made by Indians in information technology is remarkable. Indians have also been instrumental in building Silicon Valley in the United States. About six companies are headed by people of Indian descent. Many of the scientists at NASA are of Indian descent. Indians are shining in the intelligentsia of the world. So can’t Indians build a Silicon Valley in our country?”

This is necessary for Pune to become a ‘Silicon Valley’-
– We have to work hard for the creation of ‘Silicon Valley’ in Pune by setting goals.
-Excellence in science can be achieved through collaboration and competition
-By creating interdisciplinary groups competition and mutual support are needed with a good spirit
– For exchange of ideas, new concepts and mutual cooperation science panels/groups should be organized
-A forum of senior scientists and directors of laboratories can be set up to set educational and research goals.
-We need to identify the talented people in the country and provide them with the right opportunities.
-The intellect of Indians is brilliant.  A lot of people can come to prominence in this ‘Silicon Valley’ of India.
