Pune, 19th April 2026: Amid rising temperatures in the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to set up a dedicated heatstroke ward to provide immediate medical care to affected citizens.

Civic officials said the move comes in response to a likely increase in heatstroke cases as temperatures continue to climb. Residents, especially children, are reporting symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, vomiting and nausea due to the intense heat. In severe cases, heat-related illnesses have also led to fatalities.

Currently, many patients are forced to seek treatment in private hospitals during emergencies, often incurring high medical expenses. This has particularly impacted economically weaker sections who struggle to afford such care.

The decision follows a demand raised by Congress group leader Ramchandra Kadam and city general secretary Hrishikesh Balgude, who had urged the civic health department to establish a dedicated facility for heatstroke treatment.

Acting on the request, the PMC has decided to start a ‘Heatstroke Ward’ at Kamla Nehru Hospital. The civic health department has also issued a circular to begin expanding such facilities across the city.

Officials said the initiative aims to ensure timely treatment for patients and prevent serious health complications during the ongoing heatwave conditions.

Assistant Health Chief Dr Vaishali Jadhav confirmed the development, stating that the heatstroke ward will be operational at Kamla Nehru Hospital, where specialist doctors are available to handle such cases.

The move is being seen as a crucial step to strengthen emergency healthcare response in Pune as the city grapples with rising summer temperatures.
