Pune: Hinjawadi IT Park Turns into ‘Water Park’; MLA Rohit Pawar Demands Water Transport Services

Hinjawadi, 9th June 2025: After just half an hour of rainfall, the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjawadi was left submerged under water, prompting a sarcastic but serious demand from NCP MLA Rohit Pawar — introduce water transport in the IT hub.
Over the weekend, heavy rainfall lashed parts of Pune, and Hinjawadi bore the brunt. Roads in the IT park turned into streams, with vehicles wading through knee-deep water. Visuals of flooded roads and cars struggling to pass through quickly went viral on social media, leading to public outcry and political reactions.
Commenting on the situation, MLA Rohit Pawar said, “This is not a water park, it’s supposed to be an IT park. Within 30 minutes of rain, the entire area was flooded. With the India Meteorological Department predicting good monsoon rainfall, the MIDC should consider launching boating services in Hinjawadi.”
He further questioned the government’s preparedness and commitment to Pune’s infrastructure. “There’s no electricity for hours, traffic congestion lasts for three to four hours every evening. Will investors be impressed by this condition of Maharashtra’s largest IT park? Will the existing companies choose to stay? The government must take Pune seriously — this is the cultural capital of Maharashtra and a city that provides employment and education to lakhs,” Pawar added.
MP Supriya Sule Seeks Long-Term Solutions
Echoing similar concerns, Baramati MP Supriya Sule demanded immediate and permanent solutions. “A large amount of water accumulated near Ryan International School and Phase 2 of Hinjawadi. It’s unclear if any water drainage system even exists in this area. Basic maintenance like drain cleaning was not done on time,” Sule said, urging the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to act swiftly.
IT Employees’ Forum Raises Alarm
The Forum for IT Employees (FITE) also conducted an on-ground inspection and expressed serious concerns. “The Hinjawadi IT Park has effectively become a water park due to clogged rainwater drains. We found drainage channels completely blocked by mud, weeds, construction debris, and materials from ongoing metro work,” FITE said.
FITE has demanded that the entire rainwater drainage system in Hinjewadi be redesigned. “There is unchecked construction, and drains have been encroached upon. Unless permanent infrastructure is developed, this flooding will continue every monsoon,” the group warned.

Need for Urgent Action
The repeated flooding of Pune’s key economic zones like Hinjewadi raises serious questions about urban planning and disaster preparedness. As monsoon intensifies, citizens and stakeholders now await action from authorities — before Pune’s IT park earns a new title permanently: a tech-powered water park.
