Pune, 25th February 2026: Concerns have been raised over the deteriorating condition of the Karvenagar crematorium in Pune, with a city-based social activist demanding immediate intervention by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

In a letter addressed to Manisha Shekatkar, Chief Engineer of the Electricity Department, PMC, Sandeep Khardekar, President of Creative Foundation, Pune, highlighted serious issues at the Karvenagar crematorium. He stated that during a recent visit for a funeral, he observed poor infrastructure and unsafe conditions on the premises.

According to Khardekar, excavation work underway at the site has made the approach road to the crematorium narrow and hazardous. He also pointed out the absence of proper parking facilities for visitors. The ongoing culvert construction work, which is reportedly progressing at a slow pace, has further added to the inconvenience. He has demanded that the pending works be completed at the earliest.

The letter also flagged concerns regarding the incomplete construction of the electric crematorium unit. Khardekar noted that materials related to the project are lying scattered across the premises, leading to unhygienic conditions. He sought clarification from the civic administration on whether the electric crematorium project will be completed and if there are any obstacles delaying its execution.

He urged the PMC to issue a clear statement on the status of the project and provide a timeline for completion. Emphasising environmental considerations, Khardekar also appealed to the authorities to promote the use of electric crematoriums across the city in line with changing times. He suggested installing awareness boards encouraging citizens to opt for electric cremation in the interest of environmental protection.

The civic body is yet to respond to the concerns raised in the letter.
