Rajgad, 21st January 2025: Frequent leopard sightings over the past few days at Torna Fort in Rajgad taluka have sparked fear among tourists and locals. On Monday (20th January) a leopard was spotted once again near a campsite on the fort, prompting the Forest Department to suggest a temporary closure of the fort to ensure safety and facilitate the leopard’s relocation.

The latest sighting occurred near the Hanuman Buruj, where tourists spotted the leopard sitting in the open. When some attempted to capture photos and videos, the animal reportedly charged toward them, causing panic. Guards from the Archaeological Department, along with dogs and monkeys present at the site, rushed to the spot to assist. Tourists and laborers working on the fort were immediately evacuated to a safer area below the fort.

Under the guidance of Forest Range Officer Govind Langote, a team of forest officials inspected the site and confirmed that the leopard was hiding in bushes near the Hanuman Buruj. It was observed that the animal would retreat into hiding when disturbed by noise but would emerge when the area became quiet.

Given the leopard’s behavior, forest officials have advised restricting tourist access to the fort for two to three days to allow the animal to move away undisturbed. A formal recommendation will be made to the local tehsildar to temporarily close the fort to tourists.

Officer Langote noted that Torna Fort, being part of the forested Sahyadri mountain range, naturally falls within the habitat of leopards. He added that tourists often bring dogs to the fort and leave food waste behind, which can attract predators. Ensuring peace and quiet on the fort is essential to encourage the leopard to vacate the area.
