Pune, 18th August 2025: The long-delayed redevelopment of Lokmanya Nagar has once more reached a deadlock, with residents blaming political interference for halting the project. The uncertainty has left more than 803 families anxious about their future homes.

On Sunday, members of the Lokmanya Nagar Bachav Kruti Samiti and colony residents staged demonstrations, pressing authorities to revive the stalled redevelopment plan. Protesters alleged that the process has been obstructed due to the involvement of the local MLA.

Spread across 53 buildings constructed between 1960 and 1964, Lokmanya Nagar has been in disrepair for years. The ageing load-bearing structures now show deep cracks, leaking slabs, falling plaster, and even wild vegetation growing through walls, raising serious safety concerns.

Though the societies possess valid property documents, including conveyance deeds, sale deeds, and lease agreements, residents say that redevelopment under MHADA has been repeatedly delayed by red tape. “Families are frustrated and hopeless. Everyone is asking, ‘Will we ever get a new home?’” The Samiti said, alleging that the MLA has put the brakes on the process.

While some societies had tied up with private developers—receiving MHADA’s go-ahead in certain cases—others remain stuck despite completing all legal formalities. At the same time, several office-bearers are negotiating separate redevelopment deals with builders, leading to further confusion.

Kasba MLA Hemant Rasane has firmly denied stalling the project. He explained that his plan emphasizes integrated redevelopment of the entire 16.5-acre colony, aiming not only at new housing but also at resolving chronic civic issues such as poor water supply, sewage problems, and inadequate infrastructure.

“My goal is not to stop progress but to ensure comprehensive development. The Chief Minister has already approved the proposal, and this remains one of my top priorities,” Rasane said, pointing out that similar redevelopment projects are underway in other parts of his constituency.
