Pune, 28th May 2025: In a strategic move to enhance connectivity and reduce growing traffic issues, the Maha-Metro has announced plans to extend Pune Metro services to key areas including Lohgaon Airport and the city’s expanding southern suburbs—Kondhwa, Undri, NIBM, and Yewalewadi.

The proposed expansion outlines a 3-kilometre extension from the existing Ramwadi station to Lohgaon Airport, aimed at offering direct and efficient public transport access to air travelers. Additionally, a 20-kilometre corridor from the Civil Court interchange to Yewalewadi is on the table, with spurs to both NIBM and other rapidly developing residential zones.

To kickstart the process, Maha-Metro has invited consultancy agencies to prepare two critical documents: an Alternative Analysis Report (AAR) and a Detailed Project Report (DPR). The AAR will assess viable transit solutions—such as metro rail and Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS)—by analyzing factors like environmental impact, projected ridership, cost-efficiency, and integration with Pune’s existing public transport network.

Following the evaluation, the DPR will lay out technical specifications, projected costs, and implementation timelines for the proposed corridors. These studies will help determine whether Maha-Metro will execute the extensions independently or incorporate them into the current Line 3 project being developed by the Tata-Siemens consortium.

Once completed, the extended metro network is expected to serve as a vital link for commuters, bolster regional connectivity, and support Pune’s long-term transit-oriented development goals.
