Pune Metro Phase-2 Gets Union Cabinet Nod; Two New Corridors to Boost East–West Connectivity
Reported by Akshata Pawar
New Delhi/Pune, 25th June 2025: In a major step toward enhancing public transport infrastructure in Pune, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Phase 2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, which will extend the city’s East–West connectivity through two new corridors.
The newly sanctioned routes include:
Corridor 2A: Vanaz to Chandani Chowk
Corridor 2B: Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi
Together, these elevated corridors will add 12.75 kilometers and 13 new stations to the existing Vanaz–Ramwadi Metro Line developed under Phase-1. The extensions will improve access to rapidly growing suburbs such as Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi, serving major residential, IT, and commercial hubs.
The total cost of the project is pegged at ₹3,626.24 crore, to be shared by the Central Government, Maharashtra Government, and international lending agencies. The construction is expected to be completed within four years, with implementation led by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro). Pre-construction work, including surveys and design planning, is already underway.
Seamless connectivity will be a key feature of the expansion, with the new corridors set to integrate with:
Line-1 (Nigdi–Katraj)
Line-3 (Hinjewadi–District Court)
This will be facilitated through an interchange at the District Court Station, improving commuter convenience across the network.
In addition, the project will connect the Pune Metro to major intercity bus terminals, including those serving Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, and Ahilya Nagar, via Chandani Chowk and Wagholi, supporting efficient intermodal transport.
Planners anticipate a sharp rise in ridership over the years, with daily passenger numbers expected to reach 96,000 by 2027 and grow to 3.49 lakh by 2057. The expansion is also expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion on major city arteries like Paud Road and Nagar Road, while providing a greener, safer alternative to road travel.
This strategic metro extension is vital to Pune’s sustainable growth and a catalyst for unlocking its economic and developmental potential.
