Chandni Chowk, 25th October 2025: In a move aimed at improving pedestrian safety and connectivity, Pune Metro has announced plans to construct a 508-metre-long foot-over-bridge (FOB) near the upcoming Chandni Chowk Metro Station on the Bengaluru–Mumbai National Highway bypass.

The proposed bridge will link directly to the existing National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) foot-over-bridge, creating a continuous walkway across the busy highway. Once completed, the structure will allow commuters to access the metro station from both sides of the road without disrupting vehicular traffic.

Officials said the new FOB will make it easier for passengers traveling on long-distance routes such as Bengaluru, Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, and Mumbai, as well as for daily commuters heading towards Hinjewadi, Chakan, and Pirangut. The bridge is expected to reduce walking distance, enhance safety, and streamline foot traffic in one of the city’s busiest junctions.

The Vanaz–Chandni Chowk extension of Metro Line 2, now stretching 1,123 metres, will feature two key stations — Kothrud Depot and Chandni Chowk. Pune Metro officials confirmed that the FOB is currently in the planning and design stage, with final approvals expected soon.

In addition to the pedestrian bridge, work on double-decker flyovers near Kothrud Depot and along Karve Road has also commenced, part of a broader initiative to ease congestion and improve mobility in western Pune.

After the metro alignment was extended to Chandni Chowk, citizens had raised concerns about increased vehicular load in the area. The planned FOB is seen as a critical solution to manage both pedestrian and traffic movement effectively.

Authorities said the project reflects Pune Metro’s broader goal of enhancing last-mile connectivity and ensuring safer, faster access for commuters. Once operational, the Chandni Chowk stretch is expected to significantly reduce traffic chaos and improve west-side urban mobility.
