Pune: MNS Candidates Blame EVMs, Financial Irregularities for Election Defeat; Raj Thackeray Calls for Evidence Collection
Reported by Tikam Shekhawat
Pune, 28th November 2024: Following their complete defeat in the Maharashtra Assembly Elections, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) candidates have raised concerns over alleged tampering with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and large-scale ‘bribery’ in various constituencies. In response, MNS president Raj Thackeray has instructed party office bearers to compile written complaints and gather evidence against these allegations.
The MNS had fielded candidates in 128 out of the state’s 288 constituencies but failed to secure a single seat. To analyze the reasons behind this defeat, Raj Thackeray chaired a self-reflection meeting on Thursday. The meeting was attended by 82 candidates from Western Maharashtra, North Maharashtra (excluding Mumbai), as well as local and district presidents and department heads.
During the discussion, candidates highlighted multiple factors they believed contributed to their loss, including suspected EVM tampering and the influence of significant financial transactions in some areas. Candidates also noted challenges such as low voter turnout and various constituency-level issues.
City president Sainath Babar, state general secretary Rajendra alias Babu Wagaskar, and other senior office bearers were present at the meeting. While Raj Thackeray refrained from addressing the media post-meeting, Wagaskar later briefed reporters on the discussions.
“Most candidates have raised doubts about EVM tampering and cited financial irregularities in certain constituencies. Although the elections were contested with determination, candidates emphasized the need to strengthen and expand the party’s organizational structure,” Wagaskar said.
Thackeray directed party leaders to document all grievances related to EVMs and financial irregularities and to collect supporting evidence. This compiled information will be submitted to Raj Thackeray, who will decide on the next course of action.
The MNS now looks ahead to addressing internal challenges and reinforcing its base, as the party seeks to rebuild after this electoral setback.
