Pune, 3rd January 2025: The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has proposed a major expansion of the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, increasing its capacity from six to eight lanes. This move aims to alleviate traffic congestion and accommodate the growing number of vehicles, which currently averages 1.5 lakh daily.

The MSRDC has submitted the proposal for approval from the Maharashtra State Government. Once approved, the project is expected to be completed within three years. The expanded expressway will feature eight continuous lanes, ensuring uninterrupted and faster travel between Pune and Mumbai.

Under the proposed plan, the current three-lane structure on each side will be expanded to four lanes. Key sections targeted for widening include the stretch from the Khalapur toll plaza to the Khopoli exit and the area starting from the Urse toll plaza.

Parallel to the expansion, the “Missing Link” project—a 13.3 km alternative road connecting Khopoli Exit to Kusgaon—is advancing swiftly. This ambitious project includes two tunnels measuring 1.67 km and 8.92 km, both of which have been completed. Construction of Asia’s largest valley bridge, another highlight of the project, is also progressing rapidly.

The eight-lane expressway is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and reduce travel time between Pune and Mumbai. By addressing the current capacity constraints, the project will provide a smoother, more efficient travel experience for commuters and transporters alike.
