Pune: PCMC Seeks Additional Water Supply As City Expansion Proposal Awaits Approval

Pimpri, 3rd January 2025: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has proposed extending its boundaries to include seven nearby villages, with the proposal currently awaiting approval from the State Government. Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh has announced plans to demand additional water allocation from the Mulshi Dam to meet the growing needs of the rapidly expanding city.
The inclusion of the villages—Hinjawadi, Gahunje, Jambhe, Marunji, Maan, Nere, and Sangavade—will require significant adjustments in the city’s water supply. The PCMC has proposed reserving water from Mulshi Dam to address these requirements, but the Water Resources Department has initially rejected the request. Commissioner Singh clarified that the final decision rests with the State Government.
“With the inclusion of these villages, we will need additional water resources to cater to the increasing population and infrastructure needs,” Singh stated, emphasizing that the PCMC will continue pushing for the proposal’s approval and additional water allocation.
The PCMC is also in the process of preparing its budget for the 2025–26 financial year. Meetings are being held with department heads to finalize provisions for various developmental projects, including citizen-suggested initiatives. Commissioner Singh noted that the budget would also focus on environmental sustainability, with a dedicated emphasis on a climate budget to address climate-related challenges.
