Pune Municipal Corporation Disposes 750 Tons of Extra Waste During Diwali
Pune, 25th October 2025: The city saw a surge in waste generation during the five days of Diwali, with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) disposing of 750 tons of extra waste between Narak Chaturdashi and Bhaubij (October 20 to 24). On average, an additional 150 tons of waste was generated each day, including firecracker remains, gift wrapping paper, and discarded household items.
Typically, Pune produces around 2,500 to 2,600 tons of waste daily. During Diwali, this increased to approximately 2,900 tons, with dry waste forming a significant portion of the extra load, officials from the PMC’s Solid Waste Department said.
The department had put in place special arrangements to ensure daily waste collection throughout the festival period. “Necessary measures were taken to ensure that garbage from any part of the city did not remain on the streets during the festival. This ensured there were no problems during Diwali,” said Sandeep Kadam, Deputy Commissioner of the Solid Waste Department.
Ahead of Diwali, residents often discard old mattresses, furniture, and other unwanted items, frequently leaving them near riverbeds or on streets at night. To address this, the PMC launched a special campaign to collect bulky waste such as furniture, mattresses, blankets, and pillows directly from citizens.
On the second day of Lakshmi Puja, a significant amount of garbage had accumulated, and PMC employees were assigned early-morning collections to prevent clutter on the streets. Responsibility was fixed for each zone, and the Municipal Commissioner personally inspected various parts of the city to ensure cleanliness. “Special care was taken this year to ensure a clean city during the festival,” added Kadam.
