Pune, 13th November 2024: Helmets are now mandatory for all Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) employees and officers who use two-wheelers, both within the PMC premises and at its ward offices. Additional Commissioner Prithviraj BP issued a directive stating that individuals without helmets will not be allowed entry into the premises or permitted to park their vehicles.

With road accidents on the rise across the nation, two-wheeler accidents have become particularly concerning. Many fatal accidents occur due to the lack of helmet usage, yet helmet compliance remains low in Pune, despite the city’s large number of two-wheeler users. To tackle this issue, the city has implemented surveillance through CCTV cameras to penalise riders who fail to wear helmets.

In line with the state’s efforts to reduce road fatalities, Divisional Commissioner Dr. Chandrakant Pulkundwar had earlier mandated helmets for all government employees. Following this, the PMC has enforced this rule for its employees starting today.

The directive outlines strict penalties for non-compliance. Any employee found without a helmet will face disciplinary action, including fines and marks in their service records, in accordance with the Maharashtra Civil Services Rules of 1981. Department heads are also required to ensure that their teams follow the new regulation.
