Pune, 8th March 2023: The issue of the withdrawal of a 40% exemption from property tax in Pune has resurfaced. Newly elected MLA, Ravindra Dhangekar, met with the Additional Commissioner of the Pune Municipal Corporation and demanded that the concession previously given to Pune residents should be resumed.

Congress General Secretary Sanjay Balgude also wrote a letter to Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil, reminding him of his promise to keep the property tax relief for Pune residents.

During his meeting with Additional Commissioner Ravindra Binwade, MLA Dhangekar discussed various issues affecting the Municipal Corporation, including the reinstatement of the 40% discount for Pune residents. He also demanded the waiver of property tax for flats of 500 square feet in Pune city, similar to that of Mumbai Municipal Corporation.

Additionally, Sudhir alias Kaka Kulkarni, President of the Civil Rights Committee, sent a letter to the Chief Minister urging the retention of the 40% concession.

The Pune Municipal Corporation had been granting a 40% discount on property tax for several years until the state government withdrew the concession in 2018. The state government then ordered the municipal corporation to implement the withdrawal retrospectively, leading to huge property tax bills for Pune residents.

Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil intervened and suspended the recovery; however, the Municipal Corporation is yet to receive written orders in this regard. With the distribution of property tax bills for the new year set to begin on April 1, the issue has come to light once again.
