Nana Peth, 12th October 2021: A 28-year-old Muslim woman was allegedly divorced by a triple talaq message on WhatsApp.

Based on the complaint from the woman, Samarth police station under Pune city police has registered an FIR against her husband Sajid Magdum Shaikh and mother-in-law Zaibunissa from Lohiyanagar who were also harassing her for dowry. The financial condition of her parents is weak and they had performed the wedding ceremony in their capacity, she told police.

The complainant who is residing at her mother’s place in Chamde Galli in New Nana Peth told police that the harassment began soon after her marriage in February 2019. Her husband and in-laws were demanding money to buy a flat and household items like a cooler etc. They had also sent her to her parent’s house along with her daughter.

On March 10, 2021, her husband sent the triple message on WhatsApp. Her family members tried to prevail upon him but in vain. In July this year, he even sent a photo of another girl saying he will marry her.

As there was no reconciliation, she complained to the police. The cops have registered the case for offences under sections 498A, 323, 504 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and other relevant sections of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019. PSI H B Khopade is further investigating the case.
