Pune, Nashik Experience Coldest Night in Weeks as Mercury Falls

Pune, 14th February 2025: Residents across Maharashtra experienced a sudden drop in night temperatures on Thursday, bringing much-needed relief from the unseasonal February heat. The dip was especially noticeable in Pune’s Shivajinagar area, where the minimum temperature plunged to 12.3°C, a sharp decline from 15.8°C recorded just two days earlier.
According to S.D. Sanap, a scientist at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Pune, the fall in temperature is linked to cold winds from the north entering Maharashtra.
“We are currently observing the influence of northerly winds, which are bringing cooler air into the region. This has led to a noticeable drop in night temperatures across the state,” said Sanap.
Meteorologists, however, caution that this cooling trend may not last long.
“The next two days will likely see similar temperatures, with minor fluctuations of 1-2°C. However, after that, we anticipate a rise of around 2-3°C as an anticyclonic pattern is expected to re-establish over interior Maharashtra,” Sanap added.
The winter chill was also felt in Nashik, where the minimum temperature dropped to 12.1°C, making it the second-coldest location in the state after Niphad, which recorded the lowest at 7.2°C.
Despite the overall drop, some areas continued to experience warmer nights. Pune’s Lohegaon station recorded 16.1°C, which was 4.3°C above normal for this time of the year.
While night temperatures dipped, daytime temperatures varied across the state.
Solapur recorded the highest maximum temperature at 36.6°C, closely followed by Sangli at 36.2°C.
Pune saw a high of 34.7°C, which was 2.9°C above normal.
In the Konkan region, Santacruz experienced a notable temperature spike, reaching 36.0°C, which was 4.9°C above normal.
In Vidarbha, Akola’s 34.8°C reading showed a slight dip compared to earlier in the week when it had soared to 36.8°C.
Vidarbha and Marathwada also reported varying night temperatures:
Amravati recorded 15.1°C, 1.6°C below normal, while Yavatmal saw 15.0°C, 2.2°C lower than usual.
Kolhapur remained relatively warm at 20.1°C, which was 3.9°C above normal.
In Marathwada, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar recorded 15.5°C (+1.9°C above normal), while Parbhani stood at 16.3°C, nearly at normal levels.
Weather Outlook
Meteorologists expect temperatures to stabilize over the next two days, followed by a gradual warming trend. While the brief winter-like chill is offering relief, experts warn that above-normal temperatures could return soon, particularly in Vidarbha and interior Maharashtra.
