Pune: New Prison Proposed For Undertrial Inmates To Decongest Yerwada Central Jail

Pune, 27 February 2021: The Yerwada Central Jail is overcrowded with double inmates than its capacity currently lodged there. Therefore, a new jail will be built only for under-trial prisoners in the space adjacent to the jail in Yerwada. The Public Works Department (PWD) has sent a proposal of Rs 175 crores.

DIG of Prisons (West) Yogesh Desai said that given the number of inmates in Yerwada Central Jail, there is a need for a new jail here. Therefore, such a proposal has been prepared. 

The current structure of the Yerwada Central Jail

  • Total area of 65 acres
  • 2,323 prisoner capacity
  •  5,500 prisoners 
  • Circle One, Three, and Tilak Yard have eight barracks each 
  • Circle two has six barracks 
  • There are three barracks in the juvenile section 
  •  Separate arrangements for inmates hanged in Anda Cells 
  • Thirty percent are permanent prisoners and seventy percent are undertrial prisoners

Design of new building 

  • The proposed prison building will have a ground floor and a first floor. 
  • On the opposite side will be the administrative building, the office of the senior prison officer, and the prison officer. 
  • The central area will have a central kitchen, mill, two barracks next to the kitchen, granary, hospital, laboratory, medicine room, medical officer’s room, fifty-window interview room, library, waiting room .etc.

  • 30 acres total area 
  • 3000 prisoner capacity 
  • 30 rooms for prisoners
