Pimpri Chinchwad, 24th January 2025: For violating norms related to air and noise pollution, 221 builders have been issued notices by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). Hefty fines amounting to Rs 31.48 lakh have been collected from them. Work on five projects, whose fines remain unpaid, has been halted, and necessary orders have been issued.

Pimpri Chinchwad is undergoing rapid urbanization, with the population exceeding 30 lakh. This has led to significant pollution issues, including a worsening Air Quality Index. Considering these challenges, the PCMC administration has initiated measures to address the situation. PCMC has adopted sustainable and environmentally friendly building practices and expects builders to comply. These regulations were formulated after discussions with the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (CREDAI).

The rules include a complete prohibition on construction work between 10 PM and 7 AM to minimize noise pollution. Other aspects, such as air pollution, water pollution, and waste management, have also been considered. However, PCMC found that many builders were violating these regulations. Notices were served by the Building Permission Department, which also collected Rs 31.48 lakh in fines.

Sunil Bhagwani, Executive Engineer of the Building Permission Department, stated, “To improve air quality, penal action has been taken against some builders, and work on certain projects has been stopped for non-payment of fines. Some construction activities in Wakad and Akurdi have been halted. We have also issued directions to relevant stakeholders to address air and noise pollution effectively.”
