Pune: Narrow Road Near Cummins College In Karvenagar Widened To Ease Traffic Congestion

Karvenagar, 24th January 2025: In a bid to alleviate persistent traffic congestion, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has widened the road from Siddhivinayak College to Cummins College along the Karvenagar riverbank. The joint effort by the Road Department, Anti-Encroachment Department, and Construction Department involved removing the boundary wall of Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Sanstha and clearing several shops located in front of it.
According to Aniruddha Pawaskar, head of PMC’s Road Department, the road widening aims to address the ‘bottleneck’ situation that caused regular traffic snarls in the area. The road, previously narrowed to just 8-9 meters in sections near Siddhivinayak College and Cummins College, has now been expanded to 12 meters, providing a significant relief for commuters.
The route, which connects Rajaram Bridge to the Karvenagar area and extends toward Warje, had been a hotspot for traffic congestion due to its narrow lanes. Vehicles traveling from Warje and Rajaram Bridge often experienced delays in this stretch. The issue was further exacerbated by commercial shops operating in the area, with their patrons using the road for parking. This created additional blockages, particularly during peak morning and evening hours.
Local residents and public representatives had repeatedly raised concerns over the traffic problems, prompting the Municipal Corporation to take action. Notices were issued to the concerned parties, and eight to ten structures, including parts of Karve Shikshan Sanstha’s wall, were removed to facilitate the road expansion.
With the widening completed, the road is expected to accommodate higher traffic volumes and improve the flow of vehicles. The resolution of land acquisition issues and the removal of encroachments have paved the way for the smooth execution of this project.
